Cisco CCIE Data Center 400-151 Written and Lab Exam v2.1

Cisco recently announced a minor update to CCIE Data Center (DC) track in the form of V2.1 update. If you recall CCIE DC consists of the following five sections (in addition to Evolving Technologies which had its own revision to v1.1). Cisco dubbed it as a “minor” update (as high-level structure remains the same or as they say if scope of content changes are limited to 20% it is minor.), however to me it is a major update when you look at what changed.

  1. Data Center Layer 2/Layer 3 Connectivity
  2. Data Center Network Services
  3. Data Center Storage Networking and Compute
  4. Data Center Automation and Orchestration
  5. Data Center Fabric Infrastructure

Compared to CCIE Data Center v2.0, the above five domains remain identical however topics and section weights are updated.

CCIE DC Written and Lab Exams Section Weight Changes (V2.1)

  • Data Center Layer 2/Layer 3 Connectivity
    • Weight Difference (Written Exam): +1%
    • Weight Difference (Lab Exam): +1%
  • Data Center Network Services
    • Weight Difference (Written Exam): +3%
    • Weight Difference (Lab Exam): +4%
  • Data Center Storage Networking and Compute
    • Weight Difference (Written Exam): -5%
    • Weight Difference (Lab Exam): -6%
  • Data Center Automation and Orchestration
    • Weight Difference (Written Exam): -3%
    • Weight Difference (Lab Exam): -4%
  • Data Center Fabric Infrastructure
    • Weight Difference (Written Exam): +4%
    • Weight Difference (Lab Exam): +11%

As you can notice, while sections remain consistent across two versions, weights seems to have undergone significant change. Data Center Fabric Infrastructure section now carries 25% weight in lab and 22% in written exams. Likewise, Data Center Network Services and Data Center Layer 2/Layer 3 Connectivity sections were weight gainers. However, Data Center Storage Networking and Compute and Data Center Automation and Orchestration sections were amongst the weight losers.

CCIE DC Written and Lab Exams Hardware and Software Versions Changes (V2.1)

There were no changes to hardware versions but obviously newer software releases will be needed to accommodate the new features (or technologies) as outlined in the update. This includes using Cisco Nexus OS v8.x (N7K) or v7.x (Non-N7K switches) among other software.

There are hardly any surprises in this update, it seems CCIE program team simply removed outdated technologies and features in favor of the new ones (e.g. moving to Cisco Intersight from UCSC/UCSD). These changes are slated to go in effect on August 30, 2018.

When will CCIEin8Weeks release new course material?

We plan to publish updated study material for CCIE Data Center V2.1 by end of August 2018.

Please leave any comments or suggestions below and I will be answering them over the next few days.
