Evolving Technologies Section V1.1 Update | CCIE/CCDE Program Evolution

As you may recall that Cisco added Evolving Technologies v1.0 (ET v1.0) section around mid-2016 to entire CCIE/CCDE program to keep pace with the rapidly changing technology arena and in order to keep CCXX program relevant for Cisco certified experts. ET section primarily focuses on cloud, network programability (i.e. SDN, NFV etc.) and Internet of Things (IOT).

Cisco recently announced a minor update (v1.1) to their initial list of topics in order to achieve the above stated goal. Cisco dubbed it as a “minor” update (as high-level structure remains the same), however to me it is a major update when you look at what changed.

Why CCIE Evolving Technologies section is such a big deal? Well, there are two major reasons.

  1. Evolving Technologies consists of topics that most network engineers do not work on in their day to day lives, which makes learning these topics in-depth a challenge
  2. Evolving Technologies carry about 10% weight (or 10 questions) that you can expect to see in your next CCIE written exam. They also are mandatory across all CCIE and even CCDE written exam tracks.

Now, I am happy to note that Cisco has taken a step towards the right direction by adding newer topics and making topics as a whole more specifics this time around. Now, as far as I am concerned, I’d like to see Cisco turn Cloud into Cloud architecture and implementation whereas network programability into more of network automation and increase ET weight to at least 20% across both written and lab exam formats. What do I mean by that? There is still ways to go, but we’re heading in the right direction.

Overall, based on a quick diff, it seems that Cisco has added 18 topics whereas removed about 10. Let me summarize the topics that are added or removed in Evolving Technologies v1.1 update by each domain of knowledge.
